Disney Frozen activities

If you share your house with anyone under the age of 10 you will no doubt be familiar with Frozen, Disney’s latest smash. if you aren’t, it is only a matter of time!!

One of the favourite characters is Olaf the snowman, who is created by the films main characters Elsa and Anna.

With the prospect of many cold and wet days ahead we have been on a quest to find some  ‘indoor’ wet weather activities and think we have struck gold with this Frozen inspired make:

How to make a Frozen-inspired Olaf the snowman

What you will need

  • 1 white sock
  • A small packet of rice
  • A large cup
  • A bowl
  • 3 white loom bands
  • A pair of googly eyes
  • 2 white pom poms
  • 1 brown pipe cleaner
  • 1 A4 sheet of black felt
  • 1 A4 sheet of orange felt
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • PVA glue

A gleaming white sock plays the main part in our Olaf-inspired sock snowman craft, giving this cheeky chap his snowy look. The brr-illiant thing about this craft is that there’s no sewing involved, so younger children can have a go too. To build a snowman of your own all you really need to do is fill a white sock with rice, tie it off with loom bands and decorate him with googly eyes and felt shapes. And as socks always come in pairs, you get two snowmen for the price of one, so let your kids have fun building sock snowmen of their own. They could even use a pair of fleecy socks to make fluffy snowmen and make loom band scarves to keep them warm. Scroll down for our step-by-step guide on how to make a sock snowman, inspired by Disney’s Frozen character.

Age group: Kids as young as four can make our sock snowman craft. They might just need help cutting out the felt shapes.

Step 1

Olaf-inspired sock snowman craft equipment… Find a flat surface to work on and gather together all the craft materials you need to make an Olaf-inspired sock snowman.

Step 2

How to make an Olaf-inspired sock snowman… Fill a sock with one large cup of rice, placing a bowl underneath to catch any spillages and keep your craft area tidy.

Step 3

Squeeze the sock just above the rice and tie the first section off with a loom band.

Step 4

Fill the sock with more rice (about 1/4 of a cup) then squeeze the sock just above the rice and tie the second section off with another loom band, for the snowman’s tummy.

Step 5

Fill the sock with more rice (about 1/2 a cup) then squeeze the sock just above the rice and tie the third section off with a loom band, for the snowman’s head. Using scissors cut the top of the sock off, leaving about one inch spare for the snowman’s hair, then make a few snips in it for his spiky hairstyle.

Step 6

Bend a pipe cleaner a few times at each end to create the snowman’s hands. Wrap the pipe cleaner around the snowman’s waist, holding it in place with a dollop of PVA glue.

Step 7

For the sock snowman’s details…

  • Cut out three small, black, circular felt shapes for the snowman’s buttons and stick them on using the glue stick.
  • Stick the googly eyes onto the snowman’s head.
  • Cut out a smiley-mouth and two eyebrow shapes from the black felt and stick them on the snowman’s head (alternatively use black marker pen for the eyebrows if you find them too fiddly).
  • Cut out a long, orange felt shape for the snowman’s nose and stick it on.

Step 8

How to put the finishing touches to your Olaf-inspired sock snowman… Add two white pom poms to the bottom of your snowman for his feet, then spread dollops of PVA glue all around the loom bands to keep the snowman’s sections together. Let it dry overnight and that’s it! Your smiley sock snowman is ready to play with. Design created by Jennifer Shepherd for goodtoknow.co.uk.
